Chengfu Center: Buffalo - Weapon/Sword/Saber Classes Protocol for Weapons Classes Preparation for Class Be at your location and ready to begin class at the scheduled time. Weapon Safety When you are resting you must always hold the sword so that the tip is pointing downward. When you are performing sword or saber postures (during class or practice) always look around you to insure that the safety of others is respected. During class breaks and/or after class always place your sword or saber in its scabbard or on the floor away from the path of other students. DO NOT hold your weapon tip upward when you are resting, you are required to keep it lowered to the floor. Care of Weapons Your weapon is an extension of your skill and knowledge of Yang Traditional Tai Chi Chuan and deserves respect. Always demonstrate respect by handling the weapon properly. If you offer your weapon to another student, extend it with both hands with the tip pointing downward and the cutting edges away from the recipient. It is a good idea to wipe the blade with a soft cloth after each use. Also, you should transport your weapon in a sword bad or case. Place a nametag on the bag or case to prevent confusion as to ownership. Method of Instructions Each sword or saber posture will be presented and demonstrated
at three levels: (1) the basic shape and elements of the movements;
(2) the connections of the movements to the whole body; and (3) the
intentions, expressions of external and internal energy, and refinements
of the posture. Students should make a reasonable effort to learn
and remember the names of the postures so that questions regarding
specific movements can be referenced to the postures. Each class
will have time set aside for practicing new postures or refinements
of movements to avoid individual practice of various movements during
the instructional part of the class.
