What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi is a system of exercises for health and relaxation that can be
practiced at any age. It is an ancient Chinese discipline followed by
millions of people all over the world.
Who can practice Tai Chi?
Everyone, regardless of their age and physical abilities, can start
Tai Chi. Every student learns to practice according to his/her ability
and within his/her natural range of movement. Regular practice will
increase mobility and relaxation.
Therapeutic effects
After many centuries, Tai Chi Chuan became well known as an ideal exercise
to reduce stress, to improve concentration, coordination and balance.
Through various movements working on more than 700 parts of the human
body, it helps not only to stretch and strengthen muscles, but also
it helps to maintain elastic ligaments, flexible tendons and mobile
joints.
Executed in a calm and relaxed manner, the movements improve respiration.
The body becomes less tense, which improves blood circulation, reduces
high blood pressure and lightens the workload on the heart.
A Talk on Practice, by Yang Cheng Fu
Although there are rather a lot of different styles of Chinese martial
arts, they are all alike in that successive generations have striven
all their lives and with all there might to explain the principles
and theory contained in these techniques, but those efforts have never
been totally successful. Nevertheless, if a student will expend the
effort of one day of practice, he will receive the achievements of
one day of work. Over the days and the months this accumulates until
everything falls into place naturally.
Tai Chi Chuan Weapons
The traditional Yang style does not have many weapons. They are divided
into two groups: long and short handled weapons. The short weapons
are the 67 - move Sword Form and the 13 - move Sabre Form. Now the
long weapons. They used to include the long spear (or Yang Style 13
- move Spear), but later for safety reasons removed the spear head
so that it became a long staff. The techniques for the staff remain
the same as the original spear form.
